Biography

Dr. Nancy Baxter obtained her MD from the School of Medicine at the University of Toronto and then completed her PhD in Clinical Epidemiology from the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto. She trained extensively as a medical physician and completed her board certification in colon and rectal surgery.
Dr. Baxter is the Head of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. She continues to maintain her appointment as Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She is a scientist with the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael's Hospital and a Senior Scientist in the Cancer Theme Group with the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences.
She was the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health from 2016-2020 as well as being the Provincial GI Endoscopy Lead for Ontario at Cancer Care Ontario from 2013 - 2020.
She is a clinical epidemiology and health services researcher interested in the effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening, long-term survivorship of cancer survivors and quality of surgical care. She has extensive experience in the use of administrative data and cancer registry data to evaluate long-term consequences of cancer care for adults.
Dr. Baxter is currently Principal or Co-Principal Investigator on 10 existing peer-reviewed government and not-for profit and research grants and co-Investigator on over 18 peer-reviewed grants at both the provincial and national level. She has held continuous national funding since 2004 and has secured over $11,000,000 in peer reviewed funds as PI/co-PI over her career. She is Primary Graduate Supervisor to 3 graduate students currently completing their Master of Science and/or PhD training, and is a thesis committee member to 8 other graduate students currently pursuing research training through graduate units at the University of Toronto.
